Types of Flat Roof Construction
MBR (Modified Bitumen Roof)
The construction of these is to some extent different because they are constructed from fiberglass-based sheets of asphalt. These alternating layers are smearedwith hot bitumen between each layer.
These are the more often usedcommercial flat roof materials rather than forresidential buildings, but they can be great alternatives if you wish.
Prefabricated roofing is the cheapest option, but over time, sunlight degrades the asphalt base and requires replacement sooner than other options.
Built Up Roofing (BUR)
This is the generic term for flat roofs construction which uses many alternate layers of felts and sealants. Included in these are:
- Asphalt
- Coal tar pitch
- Cold application adhesive
- Insulation,and others.
It is more commonly known as “tar and gravel roof” because it has a final covering gravel or other crushed material.
